Celebrating Thirty Years of Restoration

Hill Close Gardens launches fundraising appeal for ongoing Recovery and Renewal

April 2024 sees the launch of our charitable fundraising appeal “Hill Close Gardens 30 Recovery & Renewal”, which commemorates three decades of restoration and is designed to ensure a vibrant future for the gardens.

The fundraising appeal will run for 12 months through to Easter 2025. In addition to the gardens’ regular events, special activities will be organised for our wonderful supporters and to highlight the impact of their contributions.

Adopted for restoration in 1994, Hill Close Gardens holds the prestigious status of a listed heritage garden, renowned for its Victorian garden plots and picturesque summerhouses. Over the past thirty years, the gardens have flourished with the unwavering support of volunteers, members, staff, and generous donors. Now, as the gardens embark on their next chapter, a call to action is sounded to ensure their continued evolution and resilience.

Amidst the challenges posed by the global pandemic, Hill Close Gardens stood as a beacon of solace, offering a sanctuary for all amidst the turmoil. However, the subsequent financial strain, compounded by energy price hikes, has necessitated urgent action to secure the gardens’ future. With the Gardens’ financial reserves depleted and operating in an increasingly complex landscape, the Trust is committed to charting a course towards long-term financial stability and growth.

The Hill Close Gardens 30 Recovery & Renewal appeal targets four key areas for funding:

  • 1. Going Greener: Pursuing a carbon-neutral operation, reducing waste, and enhancing sustainable horticulture.
  • 2. Our Community: Enriching the Gardens’ community engagement, volunteer opportunities, and educational programmes.
  • 3. Our Buildings: Preserving and maintaining the historic summerhouses, visitor center, and other architectural treasures.
  • 4. IT and Human Resources: Enhancing operational efficiency, digital transformation, and outreach efforts.

Robert Bleasdale, Trustee, Hill Close Gardens said:

“The Trust acknowledges the invaluable support received over the past three decades, without which the gardens would not have attained their esteemed status. However, the journey continues, and the Trust invites individuals and organizations alike to join hands in shaping the gardens’ future. We hope everyone can join us in celebrating thirty years of restoration and embarking on a new chapter of growth and resilience. Together, we can ensure that Hill Close Gardens remains a cherished sanctuary for generations to come.”
